Q) Thanks a lot for being part of the segment. Alok, you have decades of experience in capital markets, tell us how do you keep yourself mentally fit?

A) A sound mind coupled with a healthy and physically fit body isn’t merely a lifestyle choice; it seamlessly integrates into both personal life and professional endeavours.

Although many activities, and occasionally market fluctuations, may initially seem stressful, adhering to a disciplined, process-oriented approach significantly aids in achieving results while minimizing stress levels.

Maintaining high energy levels and a composed mindset stem from this commitment to fitness. Consequently, it greatly assists me in managing the portfolios under my care.

While there exist myriad methods to enhance mental and physical well-being, it’s imperative to devise a plan tailored to individual preferences and schedules

Personally, engaging in regular running, participating in marathons, attending frequent gym sessions, playing tennis, and enjoying the company of cherished friends infuse life with vitality and enthusiasm, furnishing the extra vigour and motivation needed to excel at work.

In addition to physical exercise, adopting a balanced diet plays a pivotal role in nurturing both physical and mental health. Prioritizing nutritious foods ensures the sustenance of stamina and focus required for optimal brain function.

Q) Running regular marathons is very interesting. How do you find the time, and how do you prepare yourself mentally and physically for the event?

A) Participating in a marathon typically spans about 4-5 hours, yet it serves as a culmination, representing numerous hours, days, and months of dedicated practice and strength training sessions.

Similarly, portfolio management mirrors this concept. Performance metrics are not merely results but symbols of years of diligent effort and comprehension.

Quoting Swami Vivekananda, “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream of it, and live on that idea.” This philosophy underscores the singular focus and dedication required for success, resonating with both athletic pursuits like marathon running and professional endeavours such as portfolio management.

The initial step towards achieving enhanced levels of mental and physical fitness involves a steadfast resolve. Subsequently, it’s imperative to explore avenues for progress and improvement.

Mastering marathon running demands consistent practice and structured training. However, it’s crucial to maintain proper form and avoid overexertion, as disregarding these aspects can yield unfavourable outcomes.

Seeking guidance from experienced professionals is advisable at the outset. I followed this approach for the first two years before transitioning to self-directed practice, tailored to suit my personal rhythm and schedule.

Renowned Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar often stressed the significance of staying present and approaching tasks methodically. When queried about his mindset during an innings where he achieves a century, he remarked, “I just keep it simple. Watch the ball and play it on merit.” This mantra encapsulates the essence of focus and mindfulness, applicable not only in cricket but also in various aspects of life and profession.

Q) Is there a time that you have allotted for your regular gym sessions?

A) Many professions, including those in the capital markets, demand considerable time commitments. However, implementing structured processes can aid in achieving even the most demanding goals.

Establishing routines such as having an early dinner and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule allows individuals to obtain adequate rest and rise early in the morning—a crucial aspect of maintaining a regular fitness regimen.

Dedicating just 60 to 90 minutes of time (equivalent to only 4-6% of a day’s total) is sufficient for incorporating a fitness routine into one’s daily schedule.

Although running serves as an effective cardiovascular exercise that engages various muscle groups, it’s important to supplement it with strength training exercises.

Personally, I alternate between running and gym sessions on different days. Given my schedule, morning workouts are the most convenient to integrate, ensuring consistency in my fitness routine.

Q) Tennis is also a great way to rejuvenate the body and mind as well as work on your concentration. How was your experience and what prompted you to start playing tennis?

A) Unlike running and going to the gym, tennis is a sport—a dynamic activity that offers greater enjoyment, particularly when played with friends. I find pleasure in engaging in tennis matches during the evenings with my companions.

Not only does it provide mental refreshment, but it also serves as an excellent means of rejuvenating both the body and mind.

Tennis, being a ball sport, inherently enhances one’s hand-eye-leg-ball coordination, contributing to overall physical fitness. This aspect holds particular significance for individuals engaged in sedentary work environments, as it promotes movement and agility.

What initially began as occasional weekend games has now evolved into a regular fixture in my routine.

Q) How did sports help you in your professional journey?

A) Over time, I’ve come to recognize the profound meditative state that playing tennis induces. When I’m on the court, my entire focus is centred on the game and tracking the ball.

This intense concentration has significantly enhanced my ability to stay focused and has had a positive impact on my overall concentration levels.

As I trained for marathons, I observed numerous instances of individuals sustaining injuries, both among acquaintances and through news reports.

One common factor I identified was a tendency to neglect proper exercise and prioritize speed over safety. To mitigate this risk, I made a conscious decision to run without a watch, alleviating the pressure of constantly monitoring my pace.

However, I still recognized the importance of monitoring my heart rate, which led me to concentrate on regulating my breathing patterns instead.

Hours spent running, with a deliberate focus on breathing, unexpectedly transformed into a form of meditation. Although not initially intended, this shift in mindset became a natural outcome.

Engaging in my rhythm and concentrating solely on my breath during runs creates a meditative state where time seems to pass effortlessly.

The combination of running, gym workouts, and playing tennis has played a crucial role in enhancing both my physical and mental fitness. The benefits of this regimen in my professional journey cannot be overstated.

It has heightened my energy levels throughout the day, sharpened my focus, improved my organization and planning skills and fostered a sense of calmness even in challenging situations.

Having a structured approach to fitness has instilled a sense of discipline and methodology in pursuing all my objectives.

Q) Tell us a little bit about yourself. What prompted you to join capital markets?

A) As a student, I found myself drawn to two distinct passions: mathematics and cricket. Capital markets, however, emerged gradually as a career path rather than a childhood aspiration.

Growing up in a family with a business background, it seemed only natural to consider joining the family business. However, my perspective shifted during my time at St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata.

One particular day stands out vividly in my memory: after joyously clearing my CA Foundation exam, I entered class only to discover that India’s top-ranking students in the subject were seated right beside me.

This eye-opening experience exposed me to the realm of “unthinkable possibilities” and sparked a newfound curiosity within me—I wanted to delve deeper and learn more.

As I delved into the world of finance and explored the stories of successful investors, my passion for investing began to take root. I found myself relishing the process of analysing markets, studying companies, and making investment decisions.

The dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment of the capital markets provided the perfect outlet for applying my skills and knowledge.

A desire for financial independence, coupled with the promise of growth opportunities, the allure of challenge and competition, and the intellectual stimulation inherent in the field—all of these factors served to fuel my determination to excel in this domain.
