At VIT Vellore, almost 10% of the batch (9,000 students) have secured jobs, courtesy TCS. This has raised hopes at other campuses, including VIT, who are expecting visits from more companies in the coming weeks, said officials at engineering colleges.
IT companies like Infosys, Wipro, TCS are vital for engineering colleges as they tend to make large hirings, ranging from a few hundreds to thousands, usually in September.
“TCS, like many other IT services companies, used to come in September-October. We thought it would not visit at all…it is a big relief for our campus that it made its visit and closed recruitment in the first week of February,” said Dr N Venkata Sastry, director, career centre, at SRM Institute of Science and Technology.
“We expect other companies also to visit now…Infosys process has just started,” he said. TCS has given 410 offers this year for three profiles — at the top is Prime (Rs 9 lakh per annum), digital in the middle and Ninja (Rs 3-4 lakh per annum). Accenture has hired over 150 students so far from SRMIST and its diversity hiring round is currently taking place at the campus, Sastry said.
This is the first time that TCS has offered Prime salary profiles at both SRMIST and VIT Vellore.VIT Vellore has received over 900 offers from TCS including 97 for Prime profiles.“This is the highest in the country,” said Samuel Rajkumar, director, CDC (career development centre), VIT Vellore. “Infosys is also expected to recruit for the ‘power programmer’ profile this season, he said. VIT Vellore has a total of 9,000 students in a batch. Accenture hired over 180 students, many with annual salary packages of about Rs 12 lakh, said Rajkumar.
Campus hirings are lower than last year but with offers lately trickling in from some IT giants, the colleges see a glimmer of hope. At VIT Vellore, TCS had hired over 3,500 in 2023 while at SRMIST, it recruited over 2,000 students.
“TCS has confirmed and said they will come soon,” said M.N. Guruvenkatesh, senior vice president, placements and skill development, Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering. Last year, TCS had hired around 100 from the institute. However, this year, he expects the figure to be around 50-60. Accenture has hired 88 students, compared to over 100 last time, he said.
“Post TCS….other IT major behemoths may also visit the campuses. Campus hiring is integral for the IT services firms. They may miss out or delay one or two recruitment cycles…but they are soon likely to come back with a bang,” said Anshuman Das, cofounder, Careernet, a staffing and recruitment services firm based in Bengaluru. Das estimates overall campus hiring to be about 30% lower this year compared to the last season.
Praveen Sankaran, chairperson of Centre for Career Development at NIT Calicut, said TCS has shortlisted candidates from the institute as part of its INE hiring wherein the company goes to institutes of national eminence. These are more high-paying roles of around Rs12 lakh, he said.
“HCL Tech also hired seven students earlier this month for SDE roles at packages of Rs 20 lakh,” Sankaran added.
TCS, Cognizant, Capgemini, HCLTech, and Accenture did not respond to ET’s emailed queries till press time.
TCS’ chief executive K. Krithivasan said in a Nasscom session recently, “As we are already seeing some green shoots in the economy, we need more people for more work. In fact, we have no plans to reduce our hiring plans and will continue to hire the same way as we have been doing. Probably, we will have to change the hiring phase, but no cutting down on our hiring plans, for sure.”
