India’s aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 has led to a surge in green jobs- jobs that contribute to preserve or restore the environment. According to Teamlease, at the end of 2023, approximately 18.5 million green jobs were created across various industries, with projections indicating a doubling of this number by 2047. The demand for skilled talent in the green and renewable sector is skyrocketing, outpacing the rate of curriculum updates in educational institutions.

The global energy transition
Javier Arias, Senior Marketing Manager at EIT InnoEnergy, provided insights into the global energy transition. Europe, a pioneer in green energy adoption, has invested significantly in renewable and sustainable sources. Other nations, including India, are now following suit with ambitious plans for renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), and sustainability initiatives.

The recent geopolitical developments, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, have underscored the importance of energy security. This has led to an acceleration of the energy transition, resulting in the creation of thousands of jobs globally. The industry is evolving rapidly, requiring not only new hires but also the reskilling and upskilling of the existing workforce.

India’s ambitious goals and myriad opportunities
Sailesh Lalla, Chief Business Officer at NIIT MTS, emphasised India’s ambitious energy transition goals. With targets to source 50% of energy from renewables by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, India presents enormous opportunities driven by economic growth, urbanisation, and increased electrification.

Lalla highlighted the three key dimensions of India’s energy transition: mobility, residential energy, and industrial sectors. This includes initiatives likevehicle electrification, photovoltaic solar and wind power adoption, and the pivotal role of green hydrogen in decarbonising major polluting industries.Educational initiatives and skill development
The discussion also delved into education and skill development in the renewable energy sector. Arjun Gupta, Manager at RMI India, shared his journey, emphasising the demand for specialised skills in renewable energy, especially in diverse streams such as solar and wind power plant setup and battery and green hydrogen research.The demand for skilled professionals in renewable energy in India currently outstrips supply, creating both a challenge and an opportunity. Gupta emphasised the need for tailored courses, such as those offered by EIT InnoEnergy, to meet industry needs.

Arias provided an overview of EIT InnoEnergy’s impact on sustainable energy and education. Established in 2010, EIT InnoEnergy has been a catalyst for innovation and skills development in sustainable energy. With a portfolio of around 200 startups and scaleups and over 2,000 graduates from its Master’s programmes, EIT InnoEnergy has significantly contributed to energy transition.

Gupta shared his positive experience as an EIT InnoEnergy alumnus, emphasising the importance of niche skills and specialised courses offered by EIT InnoEnergy in areas like wind and solar system design. His successful career trajectory, from engineer to project manager and now policy researcher, showcases the diverse opportunities within the renewable energy sector.

Lalla discussed NIIT’s partnership with EIT InnoEnergy to address skill gaps in the energy sector. With a focus on both offering high-end skills through its Master’s programmes and specialised technical education, the collaboration aims to bridge the gap in the green and renewable sector workforce.

Looking ahead: A Seminal moment in skilling
In conclusion, Lalla emphasised that the energy sector is at a seminal moment in terms of skilling. The sector demands a wide range of skills, from high-end technical expertise for engineering graduates to specialised technical skills for the workforce. He drew parallels with the IT sector’s growth, highlighting the opportunity for organisations to play a crucial role in developing talent at scale.

The event provided a comprehensive understanding of the renewable energy sector’s present and future, highlighting the need for specialised education and skills development to meet the growing demands of this dynamic industry.
